What is Music Together®?
Music Together® is a research-based early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and the grownups who love them®. Since 1987, families around the world have experienced Music Together® through classes for families, schools, and clinical settings. Today, classes are found in nearly 2,000 communities in 35 countries. At Peek-a-Boo Family Music, families from Northern Westechester and Putnam Counties can experience the same internationally recognized program right here in our community.
What happens in a Music Together® class?
Each 45-minute Music Together class is a multisensory experience filled with singing, creative movement, visual props, instrument play, and other playful music activities. Children might be singing and shaking instruments one minute and dancing around the room the next. Some jump right in, while others watch or explore. Every response is welcome. Your teacher guides the activities while you participate alongside your child.
Why is music important for babies and toddlers?
Music gives babies and toddlers so many ways to learn, grow, and connect. Singing, moving, and playing with music supports parent-child bonding and your child’s natural music development along with their cognitive, language, physical, and social-emotional development. And it’s never too early to start. Even the youngest babies are listening and responding to rhythm, melody, and the sounds around them. Music Together® classes turn those natural responses into playful opportunities to explore music with the grownups they love—and begin building a relationship with music that can last a lifetime.
My child doesn't sit still. Is that okay?
Absolutely. Children learn in different ways, and there's no expectation that they sit in the circle. Some children sing and dance right away, while others prefer to watch, explore, or move around the room. All of these are natural ways of participating and learning in a Music Together class.
My child has a cold. Can we still come to class?
Please do not come to class if you or your child is sick. Use your best judgement. We know that children can have lingering coughs after an illness and runny noses come with the toddler territory. If your child has these lingering symptoms, take care to stay safe when you come to class. Please take advantage of the running water and soap at all locations to wash hands before and after class, especially to protect against Norovirus, which is not killed by hand sanitizer. All locations are equipped with wipes and tissues as well, and always make sure to put mouthed instruments in the wet basket.
Can I take pictures or videos of my child in class?
To avoid interrupting the immersive musical experience of class, please keep phones and cameras out of sight during class time. If you would like to take pictures before or after class, you are welcome to. We also allow picture and video taking during the last "play along" (instrument jam session) of a song collection, and that will be announced at the start of class.
How do you clean your instruments?
Instruments that have been put in the wet basket are cleaned directly after class with Seventh Generation spray or wipes. This spray kills 99.9% of bacteria and germs, including most viruses and is food-safe. Soiled scarves are washed with soap and water or fabric disinfectant. All instruments are inspected regularly for safety and sprayed with food-safe disinfectant spray.
Is my child too young/old for class?
All of our Music Together Mixed Age classes are appropriate for all children ages 0-5 years, regardless of ability. Each child will engage with the music -- and you! -- in the way that suits them most, and we will meet the children where they are to offer them an immersive musical experience.
We can't make class today. What should I do?
Please visit the Enrolled Family Portal, mark your absence, and schedule a make-up.
What is a bonus class, and how do I schedule one?
As a member, you can join us for as many classes a week as you like, based on availability. Visit the Make-up Scheduler, select a class as usual, and enter "bonus" in the field for the class you are missing.
How do I cancel a scheduled make-up or bonus class?
When you access the Make-Up Scheduler and log in, you'll see two tabs, one that says "Schedule" and one that says "Cancel". Click the Cancel tab and follow the prompts.
Can my child's older sibling come to class on school holidays?
Yes! Siblings under 6 can come to class at no charge once per song collection, then for $15 each time thereafter. Please contact [email protected] to let us know in advance. Siblings 6 and up are always welcome at no charge.
We have a friend visiting from out of town. Can they join us in class?
Yes! As long as there is room in the class, your guest can join for a fee of $20. You can pay cash or Venmo.
Do I have to pay by credit card?
While we do require a valid credit card to keep on file, you may choose to pay by check, cash or other means. Contact Alexia at [email protected] to make arrangements.
Do you have scholarships?
We do have a small scholarship fund. If you are interested in a scholarship, please contact Alexia at [email protected].
How do I pause or cancel my membership?
If you have reached the two-month minimum membership period and you wish to pause or cancel your membership, you can do so by writing to [email protected] with 30 days advance notice. Your last month's payment may be prorated. We suggest you notify us 30 days before you intend to stop coming to class in order to prevent unnecessary charges.
Can I do make-up classes if I have paused my membership?
No. Because of our generous make-up and bonus class policy, make-up classes are only available to be taken while your membership is active.
How do I restart my paused membership?
Simply e-mail [email protected] with your requested restart date.
How do I change my Home Class?
E-mail [email protected] with your requested change. We can only accommodate changes into classes with available space, and cannot hold space in advance.
Do I need to sign up for the next song collection?
No! Once you sign up, you don't have to do anything else to continue making music with us all year.
